Low-Temperature 3D Pen Filament NZ — PCL 40 Colours (200m), 1.75mm Value Pack

$46.99 $66.99

The biggest colour pack we offer — 40 shades for endless 3D pen ideas. This PCL filament refill pack gives kids the full rainbow plus pastels, neons, metallics and naturals — 40 individual 5m strands of 1.75mm low-temperature filament, ready to drop straight into most kids' 3D pens. 200m of filament in total, the best value per metre in the Happy Kid 3D pen range.

Why low-temperature PCL?

Most 3D printer filament (PLA, PETG, ABS) needs 180–230°C to melt. PCL melts at just 60–100°C — about the temperature of a hot cup of tea. That makes PCL the recommended filament for kids' 3D pens: the nozzle stays cooler, the filament is non-toxic, and finished pieces are smooth and bendable rather than rigid and brittle. It's also biodegradable.

What's in the pack

  • 40 individual colours — the full rainbow plus extra pastels, neons, metallics, woods and naturals
  • 5m per colour strand — pre-cut and tied for tidy storage
  • 200m total filament length — biggest variety pack in our 3D pen range
  • 1.75mm diameter — the standard size for kids' low-temp 3D pens
  • Print temperature: 60–100°C (set your pen to "PCL" or "Low Temp" mode)

Why a 40-colour pack?

Once kids start building 3D models, the 10- and 20-colour packs get used up fast on the popular shades — reds, blues, greens, blacks. A 40-colour pack means there's always a fresh strand of every shade available, plus the rarer in-between colours like coral, mint, lilac and ochre that finish a piece properly. It's the right pack for a whole class, a birthday gift, a school holiday project, or a kid who's been at the 3D pen for more than a few weeks.

Will it fit my 3D pen?

This refill works with any 1.75mm low-temperature 3D pen that has a "PCL" or "Low Temp" setting — covering the vast majority of kids' 3D pens sold in New Zealand, including Happy Kid's own 3D Printing Pen. If your pen only takes high-temperature PLA filament, this PCL refill won't melt properly — check your pen's user manual or product page for filament type.

Easy for kids to use

  1. Switch your 3D pen to PCL / Low-Temp mode
  2. Wait for the heating light to turn green (usually 30–60 seconds)
  3. Push a 5m strand into the back of the pen
  4. Press the feed button and start drawing

PCL flows smoothly, sets in seconds, and stays slightly bendable — so kids can pop pieces off the drawing template, fold them, and stick them together to build 3D models, decorations, jewellery and more.

Safe for the craft table

  • Non-toxic PCL (polycaprolactone) — the same material used in some medical and dental applications
  • Low melting temperature — much cooler than standard 3D printer filament
  • No strong fumes during drawing
  • Biodegradable at end of life

Adult supervision is still recommended — the 3D pen tip itself gets hot during use.

Tips & storage

  • Keep unused strands in their original tie-bundles to avoid tangles
  • Store in a cool, dry place — out of direct sun
  • If a strand softens in summer heat, pop it in the fridge for 5 minutes before loading
  • Mix colours mid-piece by swapping strands — PCL bonds to itself instantly
  • For a class set, pre-sort strands into 4–5 small zip bags so each table gets a balanced colour mix

Frequently Asked Questions

PCL (polycaprolactone) is a low-temperature 3D pen filament that melts at 60–100°C, compared to PLA which melts at 180–220°C. That makes PCL the safer choice for kids' 3D pens — the pen tip runs much cooler, the filament is non-toxic, and finished pieces stay slightly bendable rather than rigid. PCL is also biodegradable.
60–100°C. Set your 3D pen to its 'PCL' or 'Low Temp' mode. Most kids' 3D pens default to this range when you select PCL filament. Do not use PCL in pens set to PLA or high-temperature mode — the filament will overheat and char.
Yes — PCL is the recommended filament for kids' 3D pens. It is non-toxic, gives off no strong fumes during drawing, and melts at a much lower temperature than standard 3D printer filament. Adult supervision is still recommended because the pen nozzle itself becomes hot during use.
It fits any 1.75mm low-temperature 3D pen with a 'PCL' or 'Low Temp' setting — which is the vast majority of kids' 3D pens sold in New Zealand. Check your pen's manual for the supported filament type. If your pen only takes high-temperature PLA, this PCL refill won't melt correctly.
Choose the 40-colour pack if you want maximum variety, are buying a class set, a birthday gift, or refilling a 3D pen that's been in steady use for several weeks. The 30-colour pack is the right starter pack for the first big upgrade from a 10- or 20-colour set. Both packs use the same 5m × 1.75mm PCL strands — only the colour count differs (200m total vs 150m total).
Roughly 15–25 minutes of continuous drawing per 5m strand, depending on flow speed and how thick the lines are. For a typical kids' project — a flat shape that's then folded into a 3D model — one strand finishes 1–2 small models in a single colour.
Because PCL stays slightly bendable, kids can draw flat shapes on a template, peel them off, fold or stack them, and bond them together to build 3D models — animals, jewellery, ornaments, mini buildings, name tags, party decorations, school project pieces, and more. Two PCL strands fuse to each other instantly, so colours can be swapped mid-build.
