Kids' School Bag Size Guide (NZ)

In New Zealand, from Year 1 onwards a school bag needs to be at least 40cm tall — that's the minimum to fit a standard A4 folder, which most NZ schools require from day one. Anything smaller than 40cm is a kindy bag, not a school bag. Use this as a starting point, then check each product page for exact dimensions.

Two quick rules of thumb:

• Height: a well-fitted bag sits flat against the back and ends around the waistband, not below it.
• Weight: a packed school bag should weigh no more than 10% of your child's bodyweight — a 20kg Year 1 shouldn't be lugging more than 2kg.

Tip for Year 1 parents: kids in Year 1–3 almost always pick the bag with the brightest, boldest print — unicorns, dinosaurs, rainbows, sharks. A bag they love is a bag they'll actually wear properly, with both straps on.
